A severely ugly sweater may have been a serious faux pas in the past, but in recent years (maybe over the last 3 or so) ugly Christmas sweaters have become ever so stylish. The ugly sweater trend itself started a while back (it became popular to have an ugly sweater party sometime around 2001 (source)), but back then the sweaters were still considered "ugly".
Pretty much only a "do" around the holiday season, the uglier your sweater, the more on trend you are. What once used to be cause to mock-vomit behind someone's back, is now cause for "omg so cute!", and in some cases, to actually go up to someone and ask where they got their awesome ugly sweater. The great thing about this sweater trend is that there are varying degrees of ugliness, ranging from "cute reindeer" to "crazy Christmas Grandma", so you can still wear the trend at the degree of ugliness you're comfortable with.
They have even started coming out with DIY ugly sweaters, where there is a base picture (say of a reindeer), and it comes with pom-poms, glitter, and many other craft pieces, so you can make your sweater as ugly as you please! And I, for one, am glad to see that this trend of ugly sweaters has spread so much that they are now coming out with ugly Hannukah sweaters.
